Choosing the Right Precision Grout for Structural Applications

19 October, 2026

Grout can often be overlooked in construction and wrongly seen as a cosmetic filler or basic adhesive for holding fixtures in place. In fact, selecting the right structural precision grout is a critical part of achieving a safe, durable construction outcome.

For large-scale or small-scale structural applications, grouts are literally carrying the weight of the world: they ensure precision filling, secures heavy machinery, absorbs dynamic loads, and anchors posts, structural steel, and bolts. Because the grout must work perfectly with fixtures, baseplates, and surrounding substrates to guarantee a safe, long-lasting, and structurally sound result, a “one-size-fits-all” approach simply will not work.

With an overwhelming range of modern construction grade precision grouts now available—each engineered with specific additives, compounds, and chemical elements—understanding how these variations impact performance is essential before starting any work.

When specifying precision grout for high-stress structural and industrial environments, several performance characteristics must be evaluated:

Shrinkage Compensation (Non-Shrink): Standard mortars shrink as they dry, which creates voids and ruins load transfer. Structural grouts must be shrinkage-compensated (non-shrink) to ensure continuous, 100% contact and ongoing load-bearing performance referred to as an Effective Bearing Area (EBA).

Flowability and Placement: For deep pours or tight spaces beneath baseplates, grouts need excellent flow properties to self-level and fill voids without segregating or leaving air pockets.

Environmental & Chemical Resistance: If working on exterior, offshore, or underground projects, the grout must withstand freeze-thaw cycles, weather extremes, moisture, or sea water. In heavy industrial environments like chemical plants or sewers, resistance to acids, chemicals, and fuel oils is essential.

Dynamic vs. Static Loading: Traditional cementitious grouts are ideal for static loads. However, if the grout is supporting machinery or heavy cranes, it must endure dynamic vibrations and impact.

Structural grouts are broadly split into cement-based and resin-based systems. Your choice depends entirely on the application criteria.

Based on specialised Portland cements and chemical additives, these premixed powders are highly economical for large-volume applications. They offer incredible compressive strength, excellent flow, and shrinkage compensation. They are the go-to choice for general void filling, stanchion plates, and structural steel bedding.

Resin & Epoxy Grouts

When cement-based grouts cannot meet extreme mechanical or chemical demands, resin systems (such as epoxies and polyesters) are required. Epoxy grouts are exceptionally durable, inherently waterproof, and stain-resistant without requiring a separate surface sealant. They provide immense bond strength, cure rapidly to allow quick recommissioning times, and withstand harsh chemical environments, heavy dynamic loads, and vibrations.

Resapol stocks an industry-leading range of commercial grouting, anchoring, and bedding products tailored to specific structural environments.

General Purpose & High Strength Cementitious Grouts

A highly flowable, non-segregating, chloride-free grout. Its versatile mix allows it to be poured or trowelled. It reaches exceptional compressive strengths, conforming to BS EN 1504-3 Class R4 and BS EN 1504-6 regulations for anchoring reinforcing steel bars.

An easy-to-use, shrinkage-compensated general-purpose powder mix. Ideal for both interior and exterior environments, it is widely specified for filling voids, anchoring stanchion plates, and securing bolt fixings.

A high initial and ultimate compressive strength grout. Ideal for structural grouting of machinery bases, crane rails, stanchion plates and anchor bolts. Compliant with Clause 2601.

Heavy Duty, Infrastructure & Civils Grouts

High compressive and tensile strength gains make it capable of withstanding high dynamic loads. Also provides excellent chemical resistance, good flow characteristics and negligible shrinkage.

Compliant with Clause 2601 of the Department for Transport (DfT) Specifications for Highway Works, this grout is engineered for application thicknesses between 10mm and 100mm underneath bridge bearings, parapet posts, and flanged lighting columns.

Epoxy resin free-flow grout resistant to repetitive dynamic loads with high compressive, tensile and flexural strengths. Fast, convenient installation with rapid strength gain withstands a wide range of chemicals. Two grades available for gap widths 0.25 – 10mm and 10 -120 mm.

Specialised Chemical & Marine Grouts

A premier resin-based all-rounder offering immense resistance to most chemicals, petroleum, and freeze-thaw cycles. It maintains complete stability in sea water, making it perfect for demanding outdoor or offshore industrial projects.

Dry, pre-blended, fast-setting grouts highly resistant to chlorides. These are purpose-made for void filling, sewer repairs, injection waterproofing, and structural work undertaken in close proximity to—or directly under—sea water.

Precision Anchoring, Post-Tensioning & Injection

A corrosion-resistant, high-strength polyester resin grout designed for high-speed anchoring of bars and bolts into concrete, brickwork, masonry, or rock. It allows for rapid early application of structural loads, making it ideal for safety fences, barriers, and baseplates.

Formulated specifically for post-tensioned and pre-stressed cable ducts, these cementitious mixes provide non-shrink duct grouting and jointing where positive expansion and reliable steel protection are mandatory.

High-performance, styrene-free anchoring adhesives supplied in convenient cartridge systems. These are ideal for rapid, close-proximity fixing of threaded rods, studs, starter bars, and wall ties into concrete and masonry substrates.

Epoxy, high-performance, chemical anchoring adhesive. It is used for anchoring threaded rods and reinforcing bars in both cracked and uncracked, dry and damp concrete.

is a two-component, low-viscosity, unfilled epoxy resin grout designed for precision free-flow grouting in thin gap thicknesses from 0.25 mm to 10 mm.

Specialised Resin Systems for Airfield & Runway Light Installations

A polyester-based mortar for the bedding and fixing of airport landing lights even at low temperatures and, when cured, provides a durable, chemically resistant bedding and fixing material.

A polyester grout for anchoring and fixing. Fast-setting flowable grout for rapid installation and can be used down to 0°C. Gaps of between 5mm up to 16mm.

A semi-flexible polyester resin grout for filling cable slots. Can be used in asphalt, bitumen and concrete surfaces. Use for gaps 5mm to 16mm wide.
